Sick Kids
My nursing professor gave the class some great news (in my opinion); we are allowed to do our summer clinical at Sick Kids in Toronto. I have wanted to work there for years, but they only hire RN’s, hence the reason for me going back to school.
My daughter was a patient there for approximately 5-6 years on the neurosurgery ward under the amazing care of Dr. Drake. We have all heard how wonderful sick kids is, but to actually experience it first hand was something else. I never ran into an unhappy staff member the whole time my daughter was there. The staff especially the nurses really seem to love their jobs and it definitely shows.
I just wanted all nurses to be aware of the great resource that Sick Kids can be. Here is their Web url http://www.sickkids.ca/ for anyone interested.

I just finished writing my final paper for my nursing class a couple of days ago and I realize that 10 pages does not seem like a lot until you start writing. The professor says that the font size is supposed to be 12 and everything double spaced. 10 pages would be much easier to write if the font was 40 and we could put 5 spaces between each line. Oh well, 2 years and 4 months left.
My information professor told me at the beginning of the semester that my computer would become like my pen. Was she wrong!!!!!! Still love pen and paper. I do not have to save it, then try and find it and my favourite is the spell check. Sure my computer has it but if I do not know how to spell the word and my computer gives me multiple choices.................need I say more. Maybe by the end of my degree I will not want to throw my computer out my front window. I need a new one, but I do not think that my insurance would cover it that way. So I will continue to struggle and bug my best friend to help me.

Technology can be a wonderful tool but can also be a hindrance to health care. Files can be lost, documents erased by accident and not everyone is comfortable with using computers.
I do not really agree nurses using PDA’s at the bedside, it takes away from the personal care that you are to be giving. I will admit that they can be very handy to have especially if you need to retrieve lab results, or doctor’s orders, but it just seems too robotic for me.
Technology has come a long way in providing better care for our clients who need MRI’s, heart monitors, x-ray’s, pacemakers, artificial limbs and many more devices to help them live long lives. That part of technology is great.

Well there is only 2 more weeks of school in class left and then my final exam in Science Bridge. Has the time ever flown by; may be the next 2 years will not be so bad. Hopefully there will be enough hair dye and alcohol to get me through this wonderful experience. All I can say is that when this is all said and done I am going away somewhere warm with a beach to regroup. After 4 or 5 weeks I should be good to go and hopefully land a job at Sick Kids in Toronto in the Neonatal ICU department. Since my daughter was a patient there on the neurosurgery unit I have wanted to work there and give the same comfort and support to other parents that I had received.

I have been an RPN for 13 years and a couple of years ago I decided that it was time to go back to school for my degree. As I started this journey I decided I should not be doing this alone and brought a friend with me. Since we both work together I thought that we should both go to school together.
I work at the super jail in Lindsay and have been there for 4 years, and absolutely love my job and the people I work with.
I have 2 children, aged 18 and 19. My daughter is at Algonquin College taking the Pre-Nursing program and will transfer to Ottawa U for her degree in nursing and my son is currently finishing high school.
I am enjoying my time at UOIT and the challenges that go along with it. I find that the use of the laptops is very frustrating because I hate computers. I have always been a pen and paper type of person. Designing this blog is like talking in a foreign language to me. I think I would do better learning Spanish!!!
